Martinelli Motorsports Takes 12th in First Grand-Am Cup Race at Daytona

DAYTONA, Fla. -- Jason Martinelli and Jeff McMillin drove the No. 14 Martinelli Motorsports BMW M3 to a finish of 12th in Friday's Grand-Am Cup 200 at Daytona International Raceway, marking the first time that the team has competed in the series.

The team had to miss much of practice the day before while the crew sorted out some fuel management issues. When Martinelli went out for qualifying, he had completed less than ten laps of practice. Martinelli wound up earning the 29th spot on the Grand Sport class grid.

At the start of the race, Martinelli immediately began to work his way past the cars ahead of him. By the time he had finished his stint, Martinelli Motorsports was in tenth overall and in the Grand Sport class.

A long pit stop cost the team 13 positions, and McMillin took the orange No. 14 BMW on track in 23rd. He quickly moved up to 21st, then made his charge into the top 15.

McMillin was in 14th when a late-race caution period began, and when the green flag came out for the final time he was able to earn another two positions. McMillin crossed the finish line in 12th.

"We had that long pit stop, but we're young and we're still learning," commented Martinelli. "It was busy out there. I timed my passes to get out of the corners with a good drive, and I got lucky with where I encountered traffic. We're going to work on the things we need to improve on and be even stronger at Virginia International Raceway. We'll be giving it our all there."

"There was a lot of traffic out there, but that's the way endurance racing is," said McMillin. "It adds fun to it, and you can use it to your advantage. We're really happy with our finish. We had a rough start to the weekend, but it turned out well for us."
