Cosmo/Plummer take 2nd in Grand-Am Cup; keen pit strategy key to success.
(Daytona Beach, FL - January 29, 2004) Mark Plummer and Guy Cosmo started the 2004 Grand-Am Cup season much the same as they ended 2003; on the podium. The young pair put the #38 BGB Motorsports Porsche 996 2nd overall in the Daytona 250. While the finish appeared to be solid on paper, the team gambled on fuel consumption to take them to the finish.
"They had me short shifting for the last 20 laps," confessed Cosmo. "We were literally on fumes on the final lap. We decided to pit when we did under green, and then the yellow came out right after. So we thought we'd do a splash and go and hope that was enough to make the finish. We knew there was no way we could catch Borcheller without running out of fuel. We just had to stay in front of the third place car."
This was a class debut for both drivers and Cosmo's third series start. In 2003, Cosmo posted back-to-back victories. Although his aim was to continue his streak, Cosmo is focused on the championship title.
"I'm always in it to win," said Cosmo. "But finishing behind a guy like Terry Borcheller, I don't feel quite so bad. The championship is absolutely our number one focus. Sure, we're confident that we will win races on the way, but as long as we concentrate on being on the podium, we feel we can get it done."
"This was our first race in this car and the first time Mark and I drove this car for an extended period of time. We are really pumped up about the rest of the season. Mark did an outstanding job. He had some troubles with the gearbox while he was in the car. He set some quick laps and dealt with the traffic well."
A tape-delay broadcast of the Daytona 250 race will air on Speed Channel, Saturday, February 14 at 4:00 EST. Round Two of the 2004 Grand-Am Cup Series will be at Homestead-Miami Speedway, February 27.
