Burrows and Hopwood Ready for RSR Motorsports Debut at Daytona; 2007 KONI Champions Looking Ahead to Next New Challenge
(19 January, 2008)-With the first green flag of the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge less than one week away, the countdown has quickened for the opening laps as the highly competitive category fires into action with the three-hour Fresh From Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Friday. The season-opening event at the World Center of Speed marks the first race of the 11-round championship, which will be contested at tracks across the continent stretching from Florida to California to Quebec.
The race will mark the RSR Motorsports debut for 2007 KONI Challenge Champions Adam Burrows of Canton, CT and Trevor Hopwood of Durham, NH. The team has signed the two as co-drivers in the No. 198 Mini Cooper S for the 2009 season as part of a three-car effort from the Mesa, Arizona-based organization.
The ride with RSR Motorsports marks another new opportunity for Burrows and Hopwood, who have impressed since moving into the KONI Challenge ranks. Despite their rookie status in 2007, Burrows and Hopwood took a record number of podium finishes racing a BMW 330i on the way to a remarkable Championship. After getting their first taste of racing front-wheel drive machinery in 2008 and scoring two wins on the season en route to second in the championship, Burrows and Hopwood are looking forward to putting that experience to use as they move to a new team and car for 2009.
The duo got their first laps in the Mini machinery during the Roar Before the 24 Test Days at Daytona to open the month, and is looking forward to putting the diminutive No. 198 machine into racing action this weekend.
"The Mini is a blast to drive," enthused Hopwood, who has a racing resume that includes successful outings in highly powerful GT-1 equipment. "I couldn't believe how well it handled, and even though we might be at a bit of a disadvantage on the banking, we are really good in the infield so hopefully it will balance out in our favor. The big thing is just for us to get a solid start to the year here at Daytona with a good finish. This is our third team in as many years in KONI, and we're both really looking forward to the season with RSR Motorsports."
After their Turner Motorsport debut year, the two joined Compass 360Racing last season to race with the squad they battled with for the 2007 championship. The move showed how capable and adaptive the two racers are, with wins at Watkins Glen and Trois Rivieres significant highlights from the season.
"We've been fortunate to work with some great teams since moving to KONI, and we felt right at home with RSR Motorsports during the test days," said Burrows. "Their preparation is really impressive and Randy (Smalley) has also obviously factored in the fun as well because the guys are professional but the atmosphere is also great. It was great to get to meet Owen (Trinkler) and Jade (Buford) at the test and get to work on collaborating on car set-ups. Hopefully Trevor and I can contribute to RSR breaking through this year. Randy has created a great opportunity, and we just want to make the most of it."
