McCalmont and Donohue Finish Fifth With Zoom Motorsports Porsche 996 in Barber Grand-Am Cup Event
Grand-Am Cup veteran driver Mike McCalmont and Brumos Porsche Daytona Prototype regular driver David Donohue teamed up to finish a well earned 6th place in the Zoom Motorsports prepared TTL/Leclair/ Mainway/Tremcar/ Matcom/Brumos sponsored Porsche 996 in this past weekend's Barber 200 Grand-Am Cup event at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Donohue filled in for Zoom Motorsports regular Darren Law who had previous commitments.
Despite several instances of cars going off track, and with multiple caution periods through practice, qualifying and race, McCalmont and Donohue avoided the trouble and drove cleanly and smartly to ensure a top ten finish. McCalmont turned a lap of 1:40.255 around the immaculately prepared 2.3 mile natural terrain Barber Motorsports Park road course circuit to qualify the #6 entry 26th for the scheduled 2 hour 45 minute endurance contest.
McCalmont took the green flag amidst a pack of 57 street stock sedan racecars, and drove a very strong stint to keep the beautiful black and silver Porsche 996 in contention. A full course caution period on lap 25 of the 72 lap race showed that McCalmont had quickly moved the car up 11 positions to 15th place, and he strategically pitted for fuel and tires, turning the #6 entry over to Donohue. David immediately set to the task of the moving the car further toward the front of the field, and through some great passes and competitive lap times was able to secure a 6th place finish at the checkered flag.
Mike McCalmont -- Zoom Motorsports driver and team principal
We had a good run this weekend. I had a really good stint and passed several cars out on track. We stayed out of trouble and concentrated on turning some good lap times. David did a terrific job filling in for Darren, and we were very happy to have him as a part of the team for the weekend.
David Donohue - Driver
I had a great time with the Zoom team, and really enjoyed the race. The car was very well prepared and was a blast to drive. Mike drove a good first stint and kept us in the hunt, and I'm glad we were able to secure a top ten finish out of the weekend.
The Zoom crew's next event will be the EMCO Gears Classic the weekend of August 26-28 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Be sure to log onto www.grand-am.com for more info on the upcoming event or to see more comprehensive results of the Barber race.
