Racing Heats Up as The Season Winds Down
BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK, Birmingham, AL - 10/08/2004 - The penultimate round of the 2004 Grand Am Cup series happens this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. ST class leaders Will Turner and Don Salama will be behind the wheel of the #95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i as they are looking for their first win of the year as well as aiming to clinch several ST class championships. They lead by 18 points over their next closest rivals. Teammate Tim Pappas is right on the heels of second place while driving the #97 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i.
The Will Turner/Don Salama duo has scored 8 top five finishes thus far this year. Only in the last round did they fall out of the top five with a sixth-place result. Despite not having a win this year, they lead the overall ST class Driver Championship points as well as the Team Championship points.
Tim Pappas has been on the assault in the second half of the season. He has a string of top five finishes stretching back to Mt Tremblant in May. He also has one win from the round at Watkins Glen, NY. Nipping at the heels of Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell, Pappas is only 3 points shy of their second-place position in the overall Championship standings.
Barber Motorsports Park is 2.3 miles long with 16 turns. Practice was on Friday with qualifying scheduled for Saturday at 11:10am (CT). The 250-mile/3-hour race will also be on Saturday at 2:00pm (CT). This will be the next-to-last round of the 2004 season and will be broadcast on The SPEED Channel starting Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 3:00pm (ET).
