Team Cobalt California's Tactical Advantage in Alabama

BENICIA, Calif. - Team Cobalt California had a tactical advantage last weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park track in Alabama. Crew Chief, Howard Davis, a local resident was well aware of the fast changing Alabama weather and had the pits prepped for unstable weather conditions.

Extremely windy conditions, which moved a severe storm over the track, were strong enough to blow a canopy onto the track, causing a caution. Both cars were running in the top half of the field when the caution flag waved allowing Davis to take advantage of the situation by pulling the cars into the pit to change to rain tires.

Prior to the end of the caution, the Grand-Am Cup officials determined the conditions were severe enough to cancel the race approximately 1 ½ hours into the 2 ½ hour race.

"I was very proud of the Team's preparation of the cars for Birmingham. The cars were strong and true and we were looking forward to a great race" said Tom Lepper, co-owner of Team Cobalt California. Car No. 98 driven by Jack Mardikian and VJ Mirzayan finished 13th in class; car No. 48 driven by Robert Dennard and Lepper finished 16th.

Team Cobalt California's next race will be at the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec next weekend, August 5th.

The Birmingham race will be televised Saturday, August 5th, at 1 p.m. ET on the SPEED Channel.
