Automatic Racing Earns 4TH Straight Podium In Grand Sports II
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Automatic Racing earned their fourth consecutive podium finish in the Grand Sports II (GSII) class of the Grand-Am Cup Series at Barber Motorsports Park when the No. 09 BMW M3 came from last to third in Saturday's Barber Park 200 Grand Sport race.
Jep Thornton and David Russell drove the No. 09 BMW to an impressive third place finish. The car had an alternator problem during qualifying, and Thornton started the race from the last position on the grid.
Thornton and Russell charged through the field during the race, finishing third in GSII and 12th overall. The best lap time set by the car during the race was a 1:39.484 (73.792 mph), making the car one of the fastest in the GSII class.
"The car was really good. We had the third-fastest lap time," commented Russell. "We made some changes to the car for the wet weather conditions that actually made the car faster in the dry."
The No. 90 Automatic Racing BMW M3 of Terry Earwood and Eric Van Cleef finished fourth, just behind the No. 09 BMW. The car ran in third position for a while, but was passed by the No. 09 car on the final lap.
"The other guys started knocking into each other and we avoided that," said Earwood. "I had the car in fourth before I handed over to Eric, and he was third for a long time. But we weren't sure if we had the gas to finish at that pace, so we had to back off a little bit and got fourth. The car handled great and the brakes were great. The track is the most awesome one I've ever been to."
Automatic Racing earned their first podium with Thornton and Russell at the season opener in Daytona, taking second. The pair then drove to a third-place finish in the second round of the season, held at Homestead-Miami Speedway. At Phoenix, their sister car shared by Earwood and Van Cleef earned their first podium with a third-place finish.
