Rum Bum Racing Off to Fast Start at Daytona; Newly-formed team fastest on Friday and looking like experienced organization in first official outing
(Daytona Beach, FL) 11 January 2010--Rum Bum Racing started the 2010 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) season off on the right foot with drivers Gian Bacardi and Matt Plumb as the new team made its first official GRAND-AM on-track appearance with three days of testing at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.
Utilizing the new BMW M3 E92 platform, Rum Bum Racing was right on the pace as nearly 60 cars were entered in the traditional "Roar Before the 24" test days. Bacardi and Plumb traded the driving duties throughout the sessions, which saw the team post the fastest lap of the day on Friday with a 2:00.073-second flyer around the famed 3.56-mile oval-based road circuit. Some challenging weather conditions, including unseasonably cold weather and even sleet, didn't faze the team as the organization continued to gel ahead of the ten-race 2010 season.
"Things have gone nearly exactly to plan, and Gian and Matt have been doing a great job," said Rum Bum Racing crew chief Joe Varde. "We all just wish it was a little bit warmer here," he added with a smile. "But even with these conditions, this weekend was a great warm-up for getting things started on the season with the race here at the end of the month."
"The car was great," enthused Bacardi between a hectic schedule of photo shoots, driver meetings, and on-track action. "I've been here to Daytona before, but not with this car and not out there with this group of competitors. So I learned a lot about some of the guys we will be racing against this season and I think that was really helpful for the race. I'm just really excited about the performance we had and can't wait to get back here and race."
The Fresh From Florida 200 event, which will be broadcast on SPEED Channel, will feature a combined-class race distance of 2.5 hours and will mark the debut of the new series title sponsor and tire provider, Continental Tire. Rum Bum Racing will look to gain solid footing on a season-long campaign with a strong finish to open the year.
"I'm still kind of awed about not only how quickly this team has come together, but also by how little it felt like a brand-new team here at the test," said Rum Bum Racing driver Matt Plumb. "What the Rum Bum Racing crew has done in such a short time is nothing short of amazing, and it showed this weekend with how smoothly everything went. The car was just fantastic and we made a lot of progress through the weekend to be where we need to be when we come back to race, so I'm very pleased with the weekend."
