GRAND AMERICAN RECORDS FIRST ENTRIES FOR ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA
Daytona Beach (December 9, 1999) - The Robinson Racing team has already scored a first for the February 5-6, 2000, Rolex 24 At Daytona. Not only was the team the first to officially enter the 24 hour endurance sports car race, they were also the first ever entry for the new sanctioning body - the Grand American Road Racing Association.
"We’re full speed ahead, excited about our first race event - the Rolex 24 At Daytona," said Grand American Road Racing President Roger Edmondson. "We’re pleased to record our first entries for the race and for the series and have more entries coming in daily."
Driving for the No. 74 Reynard 2KQ SportsRacer will be Jack Baldwin, Marietta, GA; George Robinson, Houston, TX; Irv Hoerr, Peoria, Ill.; and five-time Rolex 24 Champion Hurley Haywood, Jacksonville, Fla. The Robinson Racing team will run the SportsRacer class.
The first entrant in the GTU class is defending GT3 class champion Alex Job Racing. Driving for Job will be Brund Lambert, Brussels; Randy Pobst, Melbourne, Fla.; and Mike Conte, Seattle, Wash. Team Seattle will be racing for the children again this year raising money for the Seattle Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. This will be the fourth year for the Team Seattle project racing Porsches. In 1998's Rolex 24, the team finished second in the GT class. Last year they won. In those three races, $540,000 has been donated by lap sponsors and even in piggy bank donations by other children.
A team which garnered a lot of attention last year has signed up for another run in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The first entry in the GTO class is Corvette Racing with two cars and drivers Ron Fellows, Canada; Chris Kneifel, Phoenix, AZ; Justin Bell, England; Andy Pilgrim, England; Kelly Collins, Los Angeles, CA; and Franck Freon, Margate, N.J.
The Robinson Racing team and the Rob Dyson team will be at Daytona International Speedway on Friday to continue testing for the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Additional test dates for the premier sports car endurance race are January 6-8, 2000.
