BMW HONORS WILL TURNER'S DREAM SEASON
Turner Awarded Third Place in Worldwide Driver Ranking
FILMS LAAX, SWITZERLAND, December 7, 2006 -- Will Turner returned from Switzerland this week with the bronze trophy from the 2006 BMW Sports Trophy awards party. Turner's dynamic 2006 season earned him third place in the worldwide rankings for BMW's most successful driver. This is Turner's third honor in as many years after finishing ninth and sixth in the respective previous years.
The BMW Sports Trophy competition recognizes the world's best BMW drivers for their achievements with the BMW marque during the year. At the end of the season the top twenty-five drivers were invited to a BMW Motorsport party held in Europe . Trophies were presented with the most successful driver of the year taking home the coveted BMW Sports Trophy. More than 500 guests attended this year's event, which was held in Films Laax, Switzerland , and hosted by racing legend Hans Stuck Jr. and BMW Motorsport Director Dr. Mario Theissen.
Will Turner -- "This is definitely a highlight in my career. To be honored among the world's best BMW drivers, including their F1 pilots, was a special moment. For BMW's management to honor its drivers in this way is extraordinary and one of the reasons we keep racing BMWs year after year. Next year I will have to try harder if I want to win the Sports Trophy overall."
Will Turner's hugely successful season including driving in three separate racing series in 2006: Grand Am Cup, SCCA Touring 2, and World Challenge. In Grand Am Cup, he scored one win and nine top five finishes in a Turner Motorsport-built BMW 330i and won the ST-class driver and team championship with co-driver Don Salama. Under his management the Turner Motorsport team also won the GS-class championship with a BMW M3 driven by Anders Hainer.
In the Sports Car Club of America's Touring 2 division Turner competed in a Turner Motorsport BMW M3. He scored two wins and earned four other podium finishes during the season, including a third place at the T2 Runoffs championship race (the highest-finishing BMW in T2).
Turner also drove a Turner Motorsport BMW 325i in one SCCA World Challenge event in 2006, scoring a sixth-place finish. In addition, Turner Motorsport entered the 325i at the season-opening round and scored a win with Bill Auberlen driving. These were the two highest finishes for BMW in the World Challenge series this year.
Will Turner -- "The 2006 season really solidified Turner Motorsport as the leading BMW tuner in North America . Not only do our wins and championships reflect on the drivers and race team, our success translates to our sales and service staffs and our product line. While other companies call themselves 'tuners', Turner Motorsport is the real deal and our racing success with BMW demonstrates that."
For 2007, Turner Motorsport is planning on continuing their success in the Grand Am Cup series.
