Solid start in Phoenix for Frisselles
(Phoenix, AZ) 11 May 2006-- The GAINSCO Grand Prix weekend got underway on Thursday night, as the Rolex Sports Car Series had two practice sessions on the 1.51-mile oval-based road course at Phoenix International Raceway.
Burt and Brian Frisselle, who finished seventeenth in last weekends' U.S. Sportscar Invitational, are looking to build on that finish with an eye to a stronger result, and the opening practice sessions gave them both reason for optimism, as the GlycoMax Porsche-powered Doran was on the pace on Thursday.
"The car is really good in the first part of the corners, but we are still working on getting the mid-corner and exit a little bit better," said Burt. "But we ran pretty much trouble free today, and saved our tires for the races, so we are in good shape so far."
Last season, the young brother duo started the race from last in the field, and stormed up to the top six before being pinched in the high-speed turn one and crashed out of the race, something they are clearly looking to avoid this time around.
"We get the qualifying race tomorrow night, and I think this might be the first one all season where we can make a good jump up as far as the grid goes, and from here, hopefully we can just avoid trouble, because with this little track, you know there is going to be some!" said Brian. "We will keep working on the car in practice tomorrow, and will be ready to race tomorrow night."
The half-hour qualifying race will take place on Friday night, with the feature race starting at 7:00 PM local time on Saturday. Speed Channel will broadcast the race on a tape-delay basis at 3:00 PM ET on Sunday, May 14.
