San Francisco, CA. (July 2nd) - Robert Orcutt, Scotts Valley, California resident made his sports car racing debut at the Daytona International Speedway (Daytona, FLA.) this past Thursday, June 29, in the Grand American/Paul Revere 250.
While driving the Canepa Design sponsored #67 Porsche GT3R for Sonoma, California based Racers Group Porsche GTU team, Robert Orcutt and teammate Brad Wurtz drove to a 9th place finishing position within the GTU class, finishing 30th overall from a full field of 47 Sports Racers, GTO, GTU, and Grand American race cars.
The Canepa Design/Racers Group #67 entry triumphed over several challenges before and during the 3 hour night race. Orcutt managed an 8th place qualifying position despite having only 2 laps available to him. He went on to record the 4th fastest race lap in the GTU category. Orcutt was sent to the pits with an oil overheating problem at about the midway point in the race, causing a 5 minute stay in the pits for the #67 GT3R Porsche to cool. During the lengthy pit stay, the Racers Group pit crew was hard at work refueling, changing tires, and directing the driver change. Once at the wheel, rookie driver Wurtz had to battle with the darkness of night and the thrill of his very first race ever. All while traveling at speeds in upwards of 175 mph.
"This was a blast and a dream come true...I've wanted to race in sports cars at Daytona for many years, and to do it in the famous Paul Revere 250, while driving the Canepa Design Porsche GT3R made it all the better! I feel that I out performed my and my sponsors goals by quite a bit...4th fastest lap, a top 10 finish, an incident free race for my self and my teammate, and a top 3 finish for the other Racers Group GTU Porsche! Just a great night of racing!", Orcutt comments.
