O'Connell Racing Pursues Clean Renewable Energy for 2009
ORANGE COUNTY, CA. -- (National Distribution) January 2, 2009. O'Connell Racing (OConnellRacing.com), a southern California based Grand-Am Rolex Series and NASCAR road racing team announced today the team's intension to pursue forms of racing that utilize renewable energy technologies and an overall team commitment of fifty percent of its program to that goal. Team owner Kevin O'Connell commented,
"Since the end of the Rolex Series season we have been contemplating where to go with our racing program while taking into consideration the future of the sport. With the recent spike in the price of oil, the wholesale failure of the Big Three, and the recent decline in the economy of late it is clear that there has been a paradigm shift in the world as we know it. We want to embrace those changes as it relates to energy and remain engaged in racing in a way that endorses our nation's effort to get off our collective dependence on foreign oil. We want to be at the forefront of racing and new energy technologies. Having said that, we realize we do not have all of the facts regarding these new technologies but we will still dedicate half of our racing program to renewable energies and continue to build on the success we have experienced in NASCAR and the Rolex Series."
The team will take the first half of 2009 to re-formulate its racing program and research the various options it will have with these new technologies. The current NASCAR and Rolex program will remain as a foundation for the team but the focus will be primarily be on these new technologies and series as they become viable. The team is in discussions with its key sponsors to determine what events and series will be considered.
