SEBRING, Fla. - Todd Snyder and Mark Ackley won their second straight Motorola cup race. and the third consecutive one for the T-F Racing/Zippo Motorsports Ford Mustang Cobra team, with a close win in the three-hour race at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday night "We did almost 70 laps on the last tank of gas," said Snyder, Sheffield, Mass., "and that was just about one lap shy of too many, I felt the engine starve for gas on the victory lap, but running out of gas then would have been just fine." Ackley, Horseheads N.Y.. won for the second time in his seventh professional race. "I went off the track twice during my stint and dropped back to 17th place, but I didn't hurt the car. Todd was the real hero of this win, just as he was two weeks ago at Watkins Gen (N.Y.)." Finishing second in their Multimatic Motorsports/Coca-Cola Ford SVT Mustang Cobra were Toronto racers Scott Maxwell Jay Malowney and Dave Lacey. "That was a heck of a race," said Maxwell. "but what's more important is that between the winners and our team, we were able to put a five-point lead over Pontiac for the Manufacturers Championship in the Grand Sports class. None of us has a chance for the Drivers Championship, so all the Ford teams really want to win one for Ford." Lance Stewart, Jupiter, Fla., and co-driver/car owner John Bourassa, Hobe Sound, Fla., won the Sports class in the wet/windy-weekend aptly-named Team Hurricane Acura Integra R, beating to the finish line Andy Lally, Northport, N.Y. in the Team Spartanburg BMW Z3 Coupe which had led the class throughout the race." "Our car doesn't have the engine torque that the BMW has, so I just had to rely on 15 more years experience and out-drive Andy," smiled Stewart. 'Lance really took me to school today." added Lally, but he only has a one-point lead on me for the championship, and I think we can win that at Daytona next month." Finishing an amazing sixth overall and winning the Touring class was Scott Hartmann, Newport Beach, Calif., and co-driver Joe Foster, Gainesville, Ga. 'We only needed one gas stop," said Hartmann, 'and our Audi A-4 Quattro was flawless all weekend long- The only thing that could have improved our finish would have been rain - if it had rained we might have finished in the top three overall Instead of just winning our class." Bob Saw, Falmouth, Mass., and co-driver/car owner SIP Fenton, Keene, N.H. won the Compact class, loading almost wire-to-wire In their Team Kendall Honda Civic del Sol. "Our winning and the second place by the Oldsmobile team should pretty well secure first and second for us in the driver's points. and come close to looking the Manufacturer's Championship for Honda." The overall race featured 13 lead changes among seven cars. Snyder and Ackley averaged 77.312 miles per hour for 63 laps around the famed 3.7-mile Florida mad course. Associate sponsors of the Motorola Cup Series are Hoosier, Sunoco Deringer, Sony, STP, Castrol and Speed Stick. In addition to the race purses, $181,750 in contingency monies is posted at each Motorola Cup race from BMW, Audi, Honda/Acura, Mazda, Toyota.
