Borkowski To Join Cegwa Sport At Mont-Tremblant
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 17, 2004) - Mike Borkowski will drive the Cegwa Sport No. 3 Lexus Fabcar for the Rolex Sports Car Series 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant, May 21-23. Borkowski won on the 2.65-mile Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant road course a year ago, one of his three Daytona Prototype victories in 2003.
"Mike tested with us in Virginia two weeks ago and was very quick straight out of the box," said team owner and co-driver Darius Grala. "He fit in with the team very well. We have also made a number of technical improvements to the car since Phoenix, and adding Mike to the team for Mont-Tremblant can only make us stronger. We owe a great deal of thanks to the Mears Motor Coach team for making him available to drive with us this weekend."
In addition to his win at Mont-Tremblant in 2003, Borkowski finished first at California and Watkins Glen, then driving the Red Bull Brumos Racing No. 58 Porsche Fabcar. Teamed with David Donohue, the two finished second in the Rolex Series Daytona Prototype championship.
Borkowski also was the 1997 Trans-Am Rookie of the Year. He joined Tommy Kendall as the only two Trans-Am drivers to win races that season. The Cornell University graduate began racing quarter midgets at the age of seven and later won back-to-back championships in Pro Formula 2000 and Pro Sports 2000. He also campaigned in the Indy Lights series as a protégé of open-wheel legend Bobby Rahal.
Borkowski will co-drive with Grala and veteran sports car racer John Lloyd, the team's full-time driver pair for 2004. Both Grala and Lloyd competed at Mont-Tremblant in 2002. In Ferrari Challenge competition, Grala qualified on pole and won the race on his way to winning the 2002 series championship.
Cegwa Sport was one of the six founding teams in the 2003 Daytona Prototype class. They were also the first team to campaign and develop the Lexus/Toyota V8 power plant, which has dominated qualifying in the first three events of 2004. The team scored two podium finishes in 2003, and made its 2004 debut at Phoenix with a top 10 finish.
The Cegwa Sport No. 3 Lexus Fabcar can be seen at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant May 21-23 for the Rolex Sports Car Series 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Tickets can be purchased by calling 800-517-5725.
