MacNeil and Whitis Join Mitchum Motorsports for Rolex 24: WeatherTech to Sponsor #86 Porsche at Daytona
Virginia Beach, VA (January 3, 2011) - Mitchum Motorsports has announced the signing of Cooper MacNeil and Derek Whitis in their 2011 Rolex 24 GT class entry. MacNeil and Whitis will be co-driving with veteran Randy Pobst and fellow rookie Joey Atterbury in the #86 Mitchum Motorsports Porsche GT3.
MacNeil and Whitis will make their Rolex series debuts this January at the 49th Rolex 24 at Daytona. MacNeil began his GRAND-AM career in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge during the 2010 season while Whitis has been competing in GRAND-AM since 2008 in his Freedom Autosport ST class cars.
"This is a great opportunity," MacNeil said. "To be taking part in a race I've always dreamed of competing in, with my coach and mentor Randy Pobst co-driving, is a dream come true. If we keep the car on the track we have a great shot at victory. Joey Atterbury and Derek are fast too, and with a team like Mitchum Motorsports we will surely have a well prepared car."
"Mitchum has put together an awesome program for the Rolex 24 at Daytona and I'm excited to be part of it", said Whitis. "This is the perfect opportunity for me to enter Rolex competition - with a team and car that is not just fast, but well prepared for drivers working their way up through the sports car ranks."
Team principal Chris Mitchum, who previously announced Atterbury and Pobst as drivers in the #86, finalized the driver lineup with performance and team compatibility as top priorities. "We have a great lineup for the Rolex 24 this year. Cooper is a perfect fit in our driver development program and matches up very well with Joey in terms of driving abilities and goals", said Mitchum. "Despite being young, he has already proven he is a fast driver with maturity well beyond his years having competed in the several endurance races as well as the Continental Tire series last year."
"Derek's experience in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge has him well prepared for his first Rolex 24 and we are fortunate to have him in the car", continued Mitchum. "He always runs well in the Continental Challenge and I am pleased to have him as part of our 2011 program."
