Black flagged session leaves little time to set fast time

Daytona Beach – Lawrence Davey took to the track to qualify the #6 Mitchum Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro this afternoon at the Daytona International Speedway. Davey managed just one timed lap before the session was black flagged due to a competitor dropping fluid on the racing surface. Despite the abbreviated session Davey still managed a time good enough for the 12th row in a race that will see more than 70 cars take the green flag Friday afternoon.
“I only managed to get in one lap due to a couple of on-track incidents involving the other cars. My time was good I made a few small mistakes that I didn’t have time to correct. There was a lot of traffic so to get where I got to was good - my time means we’re going to be lining up with the other Camaros which I’m happy about, said Davey. “I’m going to be starting the race and Mike (Skeen) will be taking over about half way through so I just want to do the best I can and hand the car over to him in one piece!”
While Davey is new to GRAND-AM road racing, having just won the Sunoco Challenge competition in Europe to earn the seat in the Camaro at Daytona, his co-driver brings series experience. Skeen is a past series poll winner and will take over the driving duties from Davey mid-way through Friday’s race.
Mitchum Motosports will also be fielding two ST class 1-Series BMWs in the race. The #63 Destiny Deep Sea Waters BMW driven by Johnny Kanavas and Joe Safina as well as the #62 BMW driven by Izzy Sanchez and Christophe Contre. Both BMWs qualified for the race and will be charging to the front during the 2.5 hour race on the high banks of Daytona.
Team principal Chris Mitchum added, “We had a difficult day today in qualifying for the entire team. Our Sunoco Camaro should have been in the top ten but like most of the GS cars the shorten session and track didn’t allow Lawrence to maximize qualifying. ST qualifying wasn't much better with the #62 BMW losing an engine coil that left Christophe fighting a major engine misfire and the #63 BMW was just too tight on new rubber for Joe to get a good lap in. We worked hard last night and are looking forward to race. We have a strong experienced class of closing drivers and we will be there at the finish.”
