Porsche V8-Coyote strong on brand-new circuit
MILVILLE, NJ 30 August -- Spirit of Daytona Racing's return to Rolex Sports Car Series competition got off to a strong start on Saturday as Marc-Antoine Camirand qualified the Porsche V8-Coyote seventh on the grid with a fast lap time of 1:12.674-seconds. Camirand will start the two hour and forty-five minute race before turning the Coyote over to teammate Guy Cosmo to bring to the finish.
The qualifying pace was presaged by a strong practice session on the brand-new 2.25- mile circuit in the morning as the No. 09 was in top-ten form before Camirand turned up the wick in qualifying to score seventh on the grid.
"The car is really good in the first few corners of the track," said Camirand, who will also race on Sunday in the KONI Challenge event with Cosmo. "Those are very fast corners and the car is really good there. It gives the driver a lot of confidence to carry the speed all the way through. We have to work a little bit on the slower sections of the track because we are fighting a little bit with some push. But we are absolutely in the ball park with this car, and we should be even stronger in the race. The car is really consistent and that's going to be important over the tire run later in the race."
Spirit of Daytona Racing had been hoping that the circuit would suit the aero package of the Coyote configuration, and the team's homework was rewarded with a strong run in qualifying as the team looks to bring a strong finish home to close out the team's 2008 Rolex season.
"I think we have a really good race car and we should be strong tomorrow," said team owner Troy Flis. "Marc did a really good job and we're pretty optimistic for the race. This is going to be an interesting track for the race because it's tight in spots, so I think things are going to be interesting. We just want to get off to a fast clean start and put on a good show tomorrow and finish this season off on a high note."
