Farnbacher Loles qualifying at Thunderbolt Raceway
5.2.09 Millville, NJ - The weather had been inconsistent through the practice sessions leading up to Saturday's qualifying session for the Verizon Wireless 250 at Thunderbolt Raceway in Millville, NJ. with a mix of rainy and dry conditions. The Farnbacher Loles team led the Porsches throughout but still could not match the pace of the Pontiacs and leading Mazdas. On Friday, the drivers got their first taste of the changes made to the circuit since last year's inaugural race.
"In the first practice, we were fast, but the changing conditions made tire choice difficult," said Dirk Werner who is co-driving the #87 Porsche with Leh Keen. "There have been a number of changes to the track since we raced here last year. Most importantly there is more curbing which is keeping the cars from dropping a wheel. So there is less dirt/mud getting dragged onto the track, and it is safer because of that."
Going into qualifying, the Farnbacher Loles team gave it their all. Leh Keen turned a hot lap of 1:22.132 in to put the #87 into the fifth spot on the grid. Said Leh after the session, "The 87 car was really good. Very consistent and comfortable. It's pretty obvious though we don't have the speed of the Pontiacs and Mazdas but I can't complain about our car."
For Eric Lux who qualified the #86 in seventh place with a 1:22.894 lap, the feelings were similar. "The session went well. The team did a great job on our car and I know Bryan (Sellers) and I will give it everything we've got in the race. But it has been frustrating this weekend. Starting seventh for the second straight race. We would much prefer to start in front. The car was great but we are still not close to the front-runners. For the race tomorrow, our goal is to be the first Porsche."
Bryan Sellers, who is filling in for Wolf Henzler this weekend was happy with the team's effort. "Been very impressed with the team and the car so far. I've spent a year and a half chasing this team in other cars, and have finally gotten the chance to see why they are so good. Eric did a great job in qualifying and has put us in a great position to start the race."
