Michael Shank Racing has high hopes for home race
(Columbus, OH) 21 June 06--Michael Shank Racing is heading home this weekend, or at least racing close to it, as the Rolex Sports Car Series is set for round nine of the 2006 season and the EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Mid-Ohio holds a special place for Michael Shank Racing, as the track was the site of the team's original formation, going from a loose gathering of volunteers helping a young Mike Shank get his racing career started, to having now developed into a serious professional full time race organization that will once again bring a two-car Daytona Prototype assault to Mid-Ohio.
The Lexus-powered Flight Options machine of Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri is looking to keep up the momentum in the points after scoring a fourth place finish in the most recent round at Watkins Glen, as both Negri and Patterson put in some fantastic performances in difficult conditions.
The Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach machine of Mike Borkowski and Tommy Constantine will see the two team up as a duo for the first time, after Constantine impressed at Watkins Glen, never putting a wheel wrong as he made his Daytona Prototype debut in daunting conditions.
"We look forward to this race big time every year," said team owner Mike Shank. "Racing in our own backyard is just a thrill for this whole team, and of course we have so much history here that we'd really like to add to this weekend."
The track has not only seen improvements to the surface itself with a fresh layer of pavement, but the entire facility has also benefited from recent upgrades.
"I am really impressed with what they have done with the track, and to see TrueSports making these kinds of investments is really encouraging for the future of road racing in this part of the country," said Shank. ""Everyone is really pumped up about the job our drivers did at the Glen, and we are focused on scoring as well as possible with both cars this weekend."
The team has been busy in the run-up to the race weekend, finishing final preparations on the car to participate in a variety of pre-event promotions including bringing the No. 6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach machine to the Quaker Stake and Lube Bike Nite as well as introducing the Prototypes to a whole new audience with an appearance at the Columbus Clippers baseball game on Monday.
