DIAZ PUTS LEXUS ON FRONT ROW AT MID-OHIO
LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 23, 2006) -- Luis Diaz qualified second in his CompUSA Lexus-Riley in preparation for Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic and gave Lexus its sixth front-row starting position of the year in the process.
Diaz' strong effort gives Ganassi Racing its third consecutive front-row start in Rolex Sports Car Series competition and marks the seventh time this season that his #01 entry will start in the top-four.
Diaz will be joined by co-driver Scott Pruett who is in Sonoma, Calif., today to qualify for Sunday's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Infineon Raceway. Pruett was at Mid-Ohio on Thursday and registered the fastest time in each of the two practice sessions during the track's test day.
Columbus-based Michael Shank Racing qualified two cars today with Mark Patterson registering a 14th in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley, while Tommy Constantine was 17th in the Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley. Oswaldo Negri will co-drive with Patterson and Mike Borkowski will join Constantine.
On Saturday, Lexus will be looking for its second victory in three Mid-Ohio Daytona Prototype events after winning in 2004 with Pruett and Max Papis. A year ago, Pruett and Diaz combined to finish second on the Lexington road course.
Lexus enters the weekend holding a 13-point lead in the Manufacturer's Championship as Pontiac, Porsche and BMW are in the fight for second. In addition, Lexus will attempt to earn its 13th Daytona Prototype victory in 35 Rolex Series starts.
Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic will be shown on a tape-delay basis on SPEED on Sunday, June 25, beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
