EFR, Leitzinger Win Thrilling EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio
BOSS Snowplow Team earns second victory of season
Lexington, OH (August 27, 2005) . Butch Leitzinger charged past Scott Pruett entering turn one with eight laps to take the lead and held on to win the EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Course on Saturday evening. It marked the second victory of the 2005 Rolex Sports Car Series for the BOSS Snowplow Team of Leitzinger and Elliott Forbes-Robinson (EFR).
Leading only the final eight laps of the 94-lap event, Leitzinger won by only .465 seconds over the Ganassi Racing Team in a reversal of the Laguna Seca race in May. During the late stages of that race, Pruett worked his way past leader Leitzinger to edge the BOSS Snowplow Pontiac Crawford for the win. EFR and Leitzinger rebounded to win the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona in June for their initial victory of the season.
EFR qualified the BOSS Snowplow #4 on Friday afternoon and recorded a fast lap of 1:22.068 / 76.586 mph. His effort placed the veteran road racer sixth on the starting grid.
EFR drove a competitive first stint that was filled with three cautions in the first twenty laps. During the fourth caution period on lap 38, EFR handed the BOSS Pontiac Crawford over to Leitzinger for the run to the finish. Leitzinger steadily moved from the 7th-position to a contending position when the final caution of the race waved with ten laps remaining. The thrilling finish found the top six separated by only 2.126 seconds at the checkered flag.
"Butch did such a great job at the end of the race," EFR commented. "I went out first, but most of the early race was filled with cautions. I didn't get many green flag laps. Really, all I did was keep the car running! Butch made some spectacular moves to get to the front and made me really nervous at the finish. It was awesome for Dave Brule and the entire BOSS Snowplow Team."
"Elliott did an awesome job," Leitzinger added. "It was an exciting and furious race. My car and Scott's (Ganassi #01) were really fast, but at different places on the course. The BOSS Pontiac Crawford was fast at the right places and on the straight. We (Leitzinger and Pruett) drove really hard into turn one on the restart - way past our marks. Scott gave me a fair amount of room and I was able to get by. It was one of the most furious races I've ever been in. The car was just perfect on the turns and that really mattered for passing. That's what told the story."
The win at Mid-Ohio was the fifth top-two finish of the season for the BOSS Snowplow Team and kept the Howard-Boss Motorsports entry solidly in the Rolex Series championship race. With four races remaining, Leitzinger, EFR, and the BOSS Snowplow Team currently rank third in driver and team points.
The next race on the Rolex Series schedule will be at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, September 10th. Speed Channel will provide tape- delayed coverage of the event at 4 PM ET on Sunday, September 11th.
