The beautiful and historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car complex is the seventh stop on the Grand American Rolex Sports Car series schedule, and veteran racer Darren Law is upbeat about his chances, as he returns to the facility at which he has seen success in the past. Law will be piloting the G & W Motorsports prepared The Valley Group/USI Insurance BMW Picchio Daytona Prototype as they take to the Lexington, Ohio track the weekend of June 27-29.
Hardly a newcomer to Mid-Ohio, Law has raced everything from a BMW in the North American Super Touring car series, to GT-3R Porsches which he drove to 2nd in the Grand American Series championship in 2000 and 1st in the same series in 2001. Darren's first time at Mid-Ohio was not in a racecar though, and he remembers the event well.
"I can remember that my first race here at Mid Ohio was in the Super Touring series," said Law, "and I had never been to the track. So before the race, I enrolled in a driver school here to get some time on the circuit before the race. It was a good thing to, because Mid-Ohio is a real driver's type of circuit. It has a great combination of high-speed sweepers, elevation change and technical parts that you absolutely have to get right. We used to get a bit of wheelspin out of the Porsches coming over turn 7 as the car got a little light, and I expect even more from the Prototype machines."
Law currently sits 4th in the Grand American driver's championship, and despite some minor setbacks during the last two races, he is excited about his chances at Mid-Ohio.
Says Darren about the upcoming 3-hour endurance event, "I really think that past experience at Mid-Ohio will play into the mix this next weekend. Even though we don't have set up data for this particular car, the G & W guys and I know what compromise in GT car set up we have used for past success. I am sure some of that information will carry over to the Picchio."
Before he takes to the track, Darren will complete a series of interviews for some local Cleveland area stations that will be broadcast throughout the race weekend.
