Pew Posts Another Strong Qualifying Effort at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen, N.Y. – Picking up from a positive podium producing weekend at Lime Rock Park, Michael Shank Racing driver John Pew is set to start the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen from the fourth row after posting a time of 1:43.689 seconds during the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series 15-minute qualifying session at Watkins Glen International on Friday.
Both Pew and his No. 60 Crown Royal XR Ford-Riley co-driver Ozz Negri have been relishing the pace that the team unloaded the car with, opening the day with the third quickest time during the first practice prior to topping the speed chart in the second session. Having sprayed the champagne on the “short course” at the Glen, the team will target its first podium in the prestigious event’s long Grand Prix layout.
“This is the best car I’ve ever had here at the Glen,” offered Pew. “I had a little bit of push at the front, but I think we have a very good race car and I’m very pleased with how we’ve started this weekend. I think the team is being smart with our tire strategy, and hopefully we can just get a good start tomorrow and be ready to fight at the finish.”
“Just another strong qualifying from John today--I think he opened some eyes with his performance at Lime Rock Park both in qualifying and in the race,” said team owner Mike Shank. “We were fortunate to leave Lime Rock without any issues with the car and just focus on turning it around to be ready to go hard for six hours on Saturday and we’ve opened the day almost exactly to plan-so far so good.”
“This car is very good, and we’ve got a few things here and there that we are thinking about working on, but there is no need to do anything crazy--I like this car,” said Negri with a smile. “John did a very good job again-he took almost a full second off from his second to third flying lap, and then was within a tenth of his fastest time one lap later so very consistent, and very quick. That’s exactly the mix we need to be strong tomorrow.”
