KONI Champ only takes one lap to score second-row starting spot
(Mexico City, MX) 18 April 08--Jeff Segal's Mesco Building for the Future Rookie campaign took another positive step forward on Friday as the Miami resident made the most of his opportunity to qualify the No. 69 FXDD Mazda RX-8, scoring third on the grid for Saturday's Mexico City 250. Segal will partner with Emil Assentato for the two hour and forty-five minute sprint race, which marks round three of the 2008 Rolex Sports Car Series season.
Segal made quick work of the job, setting his fastest time on his first flying lap with a 1:26.970-second tour of the 2.5-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
"I'm happy with my time and I'm glad things are going well so far this weekend, but really, the race tomorrow is what is important," said Segal. "I am not sure that we had anything for the pole today, but my second lap was even quicker than my first, but the 21 car spun in front of me so I had to back out of it."
The qualifying performance was reminiscent of a similar qualifying outing from Segal last season, which saw him take fifth on the grid for the Glen 6-hour event after joining the session late and only getting one lap to set a time.
"Jeff did a great job in qualifying and he's been driving really well this weekend," said Speedsource Principal Sylvian Tremblay.
The result also provided some dividends from the effort Segal put in over a year ago, when he traveled to Mexico City to serve as a spotter for the team so that he'd be up to speed on the high-altitude track that much quicker when he did get the chance to take to the track.
"I feel good about how I'm driving and the progress we've made with the car so far this weekend," said Segal. "The team has done an excellent job, so now we just have to look forward to a good race tomorrow."
