Strong start for Max Papis and Chip Ganassi Racing at the Grand-Am pre-season testing.
TUESDAY, January 6, 2004: Max Papis and Chip Ganassi Racing have started their new adventure together in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series on a good note. Beginning on January 3 to January 5, the pre-season testing took place at the Daytona International Speedway. Papis' No.01 Comp USA Lexus Riley ended up an impressive third overall with a 1:48:877 lap at 117.71 mph. Bell Motorsports, the defending champions had the fastest lap time of 1:48:311 at 118.33 mph.
This was the first time that the No. 01 Comp USA Lexus Riley had ever gone on track and overall winner of the 2002 Rolex 24 at Daytona Max Papis was pleased with the car's performance, "Being that this is the first time we put the car on the track, third overall is a good start. We are going to continue the development of the car in the up coming test at Phoenix so we can come back to Daytona ready to win the race."
This was also the first time that Chip Ganassi Racing competes in an endurance racing series like the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and Papis is looking forward to contribute with his previous experience in endurance racing, " Obviously CGR needs no introduction and their achievements speak for themselves, but endurance racing is different and this is going to be a whole new challenge for them and I am looking forward to sharing it with this professional group of people."
Papis will team up with racing veteran Scott Pruett for the 2004 Rolex 24 at Daytona (January 29 to February 1) and for the rest of the 2004 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
