TRG Continues to Lead After Strong Weekend at Laguna Seca
Petaluma, California - With a second place finish in Sunday's Grand American Rolex Series race at Laguna Seca, Andy Lally and Marc Bunting continue to lead the fight for the GT Driver's Championship as well as the Team Championship.
The No. 65 TRG/F1 Air Pontiac GTO.R, driven by Bunting and Lally, recorded the fastest lap time at the morning practice session on Friday. Lally's speedy practice run foreshadowed yet another fantastic weekend performance for the 65 car. In Saturday's qualifying race, which awards points every bit as relevant to the standings as Sunday's main event, Bunting & Lally finished 2nd behind teammates Kelly Collins and Paul Edwards in the No. 64 TRG/iRise Pontiac GTO.R. The 1-2 result in the Saturday qualifier meant an all Pontiac front row for the start of Sunday's main event.
Collins and Edwards in the No. 64 GTO.R turned in an excellent performance throughout the Road & Track 250 weekend. A convincing win in the qualifying race and a 4th place finish in Sunday's main race help in the hunt for the Championship. The final half of Sunday's race was an intense battle in and out of traffic as Andy Lally in the 65 car kept pace with the eventual winner, the Tafel Racing Porsche GT3 Cup car.
"To come this close to the win is a bit hard to swallow to tell you the truth," said Lally. "Our car was very good, but it is so tricky to pass here. I finally caught the #72 car and only had one lap to attempt a pass. I tried to make a move but just could not make it hold. The crew guys did a great job today as usual, and when all is said and done it was still a great weekend. We had a lot of very enthusiastic guests from iRise here this weekend and I would like to thank them all for coming out. I have such a good time racing in this series, and in this class, because of how much competition and how much of a challenge it is."
"It was a picture perfect Monterey weekend and was of our premier events for our partners at iRise," commented team owner Kevin Buckler. "After we took the 1-2 victory in Saturday's sprint race, we almost had to pinch ourselves, as we had now won 4 of the 5 last races. The Sunday race was a real carnage-fest, and all the yellows had everybody guessing all the time. I am proud of the drive by our guys and the good work by the team, so we will take the points from our 2nd & 4th places and put them in the bank. The Porsche guys ran a really good race this weekend. Now- off to Phoenix. I think it will be a good track for us."
With the strong performances from Laguna Seca, both TRG GT class teams remain in strong contention for the Driver and Team championships.
