Negri uncorks a fast one at Laguna Seca
Daytona Prototype track record holder goes nearly two seconds quicker than his own track record
(Monterey, CA) 18 May 2007-- Oswaldo Negri, who holds the Daytona Prototype track record at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, shaved over two seconds off his record in testing at the track on Thursday behind the wheel of the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley. Negri delivered the fast lap time during the promoter test day in advance of this weekend's U.S. Sportscar Invitational and round five of the 2007 Rolex Sports Car Series Season.
The times set during the sessions are unofficial, but that didn't hamper the quick Brazilian's enthusiasm for the performance one bit.
"This is a great way to start the weekend off for us," said Negri. "We have a great set up for this track obviously and the car was just fantastic. It's the second time in five races that we've gone unofficially faster than the track record and that shows how strong this team is. It's even better that here, it's my own record!"
One lap wonders don't win races, though, as Negri was quick to point out.
"Of course its good to be up on top at the end of the day, but what's more important is all the time we set with old tires and with heavy fuel loads. That's what things are like when we race on Sunday, and I'm really encouraged about how the car is in those conditions. Hopefully we can develop a good strategy for the race because we should be capable of a strong result here this weekend."
Negri's track record time of 1:24.357 was set in 2005 when he first joined with Mark Patterson as the two put a rented Lexus-Riley on pole before going on to take a top ten finish in the race. Paterson and Negri won their first Rolex Sports Car Series race just over a year later in last years season-ending Sunchaser 9 Hour at Miller Motorsports Park.
