DANNY SULLIVAN TO BE GRAND MARSHAL FOR MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA EVENT MAY 5-7
Two-Time Winner at World-Renowned Circuit Returns for U.S. Sports Car Invitational
Monterey, CA (April 28, 2006) -- Danny Sullivan knows Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as a race car driver, winning twice at the "dry lake" during his years racing in the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) series. During the U.S. Sports Car Invitational May 5-7, he'll get a different perspective while being honored as the event's Grand Marshal.
Sullivan, who reportedly is building a home at nearby Pebble Beach, was selected as Grand Marshal to represent Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca's 50 Years of Racing during the U.S. Sports Car Invitational featuring the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, Grand-Am Cup, SCCA Mazda MX-5 Cup and Historic Stock Cars. The Daytona Prototypes and GT cars of the rapidly-growing sports car series are returning for their second season on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca's world-renowned 2.238-mile, 11-turn permanent road course.
"Danny Sullivan has a long and successful relationship with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as a winning driver with CART and we are so pleased he will come to Laguna Seca as our Grand Marshal for the U.S. Sports Car Invitational," said Laguna Seca CEO/General Manager Gill Campbell. "I've known and respected Danny for a long time. It's a true pleasure to have such an accomplished race car driver and exemplary human being take part in what has developed into an incredible event."
Sullivan won twice from the pole in CART at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 1988 and 1990 which was after the track was lengthened from 1.9 miles to 2.214 miles with the two additional turns in the inner portion of the track. The track change occurred prior to the 1988 season. Sullivan was also runner-up consecutive years in 1986 and '87. The native of Kentucky finished in the top10 eight of the 10 times he raced at the dry lake in his illustrious CART career. He was series champion in 1988 driving for Penske Racing.
