Horizon Doings at Laguna Seca
5-5-2005 Rock Hill, South Carolina The Horizon Motorsports team drivers Kris Szekeres and Charles Espenlaub dialed the team's GTO into a 5th place qualifying spot at the famous Laguna Seca race track this past weekend. The team thrashed the car in making changes leading up to the qualifying and when the qualifying session opened the Horizon Motorsports hot rod sat atop the lap times till right at the end when they ended up 5th.
Qualifying exemplified the hard work effort of the team to steadily improve the car and move up in the field. Race day opened to beautiful weather, perfect for racing at the historic track. At the drop of the green flag with Espenlaub driving he placed the car in third and stayed there till having to pit due to a Daytona Prototype taking a wheel and tire off the car. With tire change and fuel the Horizon hot rod was off and running again steadily holding down 8th.
Then on a green flag stop for driver change to Kris Szekeres and fuel the car was off again but down due to a full course yellow. Szekeres radios in that the car has quit running. He is able to get a nudge and returns to the garage losing 10 laps while the problem is diagnosed as an electrical failure in the ignition. Problem corrected he was off again, steadily holding his own and finished 24th.
Final finishing position certainly was not exemplary of what the team, car and drivers showed. The Horizon GT racer is clearly a product of the spirit of the tube frame rules and low cost budget. The combination offers that the initiatives of Grand American in the GT class allows a team to have vision of success and achieve such on a relatively smaller budget.
Szekeres and Espenlaub drove a great race and showed that they and the Horizon GT racer can and will hold its own against the field, not including the BMW's. Unfortunately if there were any sour grapes, the BMW's simply outclassed the field by an unreachable margin.
The Horizon team is off to Mont Tremblant, Quebec for the next round in the Rolex Sports Car Series. The race is live on SpeedChannel on Saturday May 21st starting at 11am.
