Bryce Miller will start the No. 30 Marquis Jet Mazda RX-8 from third on the GT grid in Sunday's Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. Miller, of Summit, N.J., his co-driver Dane Cameron of Sonoma, Calif., and the Racers Edge Motorsports team led the GT class during both morning practice sessions that preceded qualifying on Saturday, and Miller was second through most of the afternoon qualifying session.
He lapped the 2.238-mile road course in one minute 27.794 seconds at an average speed of 91.769 mph to earn the second-row start position. His consistent fast lap times during the hot afternoon session bode well for Sunday, when temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
"I'm really proud of the crew. Getting on track this morning, we were right there at the top of the time sheet. I'm excited because we have a car that can compete for a pretty good result," Miller said.
"The heat was so bad today and it's supposed to be the same tomorrow, so I think [relative] tire wear is going to be a big issue from one car to another. It was good to have consistency in the car and be able to repeat some of our fast laps, because that will be worth something in this heat."
Miller will have a busy race day, hosting guests from two of his corporate sponsors, IPC Sytems and Total Lubricants USA. "It's especially exciting because we have so many people here from our sponsors IPC and Total. They'll be cheering us on from a front-straight suite, so we're hoping to put on a good show and deliver a strong result for them," he said.
