Houston, Texas - April 23, 2000 - The Informix/Robinson Racing team took the checkered flag at the Sun Automotive 200 presented by azcentral.com at Phoenix International Raceway the evening of Saturday, April 22nd. Robinson Racing driver, Irv Hoerr, assumed the lead after a late-race pit stop by the leader Dyson Racing, Riley & Scott-Ford entry driven by James Weaver and Andy Wallace. A brief caution period grouped the pack for a lightning restart keeping Hoerr's Informix-backed, Riley & Scott-Judd ahead of the second place finishing Ferrari 333 SP of Ralf Kellners and Mimmo Schiaterella for the final few laps.
The unique "all dark" night race began with Informix driver Jack Baldwin having to start at the back of the pack due to an engine change shortly before the race began. Knifing up through the back during the opening stages of the race, Baldwin handed the reigns over to Hoerr approximately half way through the 200-mile race.
The last-minute engine change was the last of many challenges that the team faced before the green flag. The practice session on Thursday warranted a full day of engine work. The team made a comeback despite its mechanical difficulties and qualified in second position. In addition, they were faced with transmission problems on Friday, which were quickly solved for the next round of qualifying. Jack Baldwin said, "I came to Phoenix with the intent in winning this race, however, when we began to have mechanical problems, I wasn't so sure. When I got in the car - it felt good! I knew we had a chance to win within the first half of the race and then Irv brought it home for us."
The newly sponsored Informix/Robinson race team begins its season with a good start. Dan Deem, Director of Sales and Marketing for Informix Software commented, "We are extremely pleased with our first race and our first victory. Our season can only continue to improve."
