2005 is Shaped To Be The Best Season at The Glen
Season features new races and an open wheel extravaganza weekend
Watkins Glen, NY (November 9, 2004) -- Eight event weekends are featured on the 2005 schedule at Watkins Glen International, highlighted by the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, returning on its annual August weekend, and the IRL IndyCar Series in September.
The season begins with Opening Day on May 1, marking the advance sale deadline for all race weekend tickets. Fans can once again take on the left- and right-hand turns of the famed road course in their own vehicles, or take a ride in a pace car. Proceeds from this event will benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp, a Kyle and Patty Petty organization..
The Porsche Clash returns on June 3-5 and will kick off a month of sports car racing including the Sahlen's Sports Car Grand Prix, June 10-12. The exciting Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series is coupled with the newly titled Chemung Canal Trust 250 Grand-Am Cup Series on that Saturday and finally the Star Mazda North American Championship Series will be added to the weekend's excitement.
The longest-running event at The Glen, the SCCA Glen Nationals, is back for another year July 9-10, followed immediately by the Finger Lakes Wine Festival supported by the Corning Museum of Glass, July 15-17. The Festival will again kick off on Friday evening with the Launch of the Lakes celebration, where we'll crown the King and Queen of the Festival!
On August 11-14, the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series will take center stage on Sunday in the much-anticipated SIRIUS Satellite Radio at The Glen. This year the NASCAR Busch series also returns to The Glen and will run on Saturday August 13. This is the first time in the history of The Glen that this NASCAR series joins the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series during the same weekend! Now you can see the NASCAR stars race twice on the same weekend! And if that isn't enough racing action The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will race on Friday night making the weekend a must attend!
The largest vintage motorsports event in the America -- the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix returns again September 9-11 and is held in conjunction with the Grand Prix Festival in the Village of Watkins Glen. This event keeps getting bigger and continues to break records. In 2004 over 600 cars were signed up to participate.
And finally -- last and definitely not least, the season is rounded off by the return of open wheel racing with the Inaugural IRL IndyCar Series event weekend September 23 --25. See the cars and stars of the Indy 500 come to The Glen to compete in what could make or break the championship series title. The Menards Infiniti Pro Series will also race before the anticipated IRL IndyCar Series, but that's not all -- the Historic Grand Prix series will also add to Sunday's open wheel excitement with historic Formula 1 cars like the Lotus 79 John Players Special -- Mario Andretti's Championship car!
