Indy Racing, Grand Am Sports Cars Converge Upon Homestead-Miami Speedway, March 1-2, 2002
MIAMI, FL (11/19/01) - The excitement of Grand American sports car racing will be coupled with the speed of Indy racing at the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami, March 1-2, 2002 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, featuring Porsche, BMW and Corvette, will race in the Nextel 250 on Saturday, March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway's modified road course. Prior to the running of the Nextel 250 will be the Grand Prix of Miami, the season-opener for the Indy Racing League.
"We're honored to host the sports cars of the Grand American Road Racing Association on the Speedway's road course as part of the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami," said Curtis Gray, President Homestead-Miami Speedway. "By pairing sports cars and open-wheel racing, fans will be treated to the two types of racing that have historically competed in the Grand Prix of Miami. What better combination than Grand-Am sports cars and Indy racing for the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami."
The Rolex Sports Car Series features two categories of competition: SportsRacing Prototypes and GT cars. The categories are subdivided into five classes - SportsRacing Prototype, SportsRacing Prototype II, GTS, GT and American GT - and are based upon performance level and construction methods.
