04/21/00 - Hybrid R&D Racing is going to Phoenix! The Grand American Road Racing Championship Race is April 22 at PIR and yes; the date of this news release is accurate. While PIR is only a five-hour drive from the team's workshop, Team Owner Rod Everett has made a decision to support the Grand Am series at PIR despite the teams sponsorship woes of late. "We have been hard at work recovering from a recent setback and in the end, good has come of it" said Everett. The team has obligations to its existing financial partners and will not let them down said a team spokesperson. "Showing up to literally race the car without practice or qualifying is borderline ridiculous however, I have confidence in our driver Chris Bingham who has raced here before and who is very good at coming to grips and speed quickly. With the advantage of running on Yokohama tires, we are not in a bad position at all. Our team has had a lot of success and testing miles at PIR so with that we expect to do very well".
Who will drive with Chris has been a difficult decision to make for the team. The decision has been made to hire Mark Simo who has been on Hybrid's short list for some time now. "Mark did a brilliant job for us at Daytona and testing prior to it" said Everett. "I like his confidence, enthusiasm and natural ability". Mark Simo has raced at PIR before in sedans and finds no need for concern.
The Hybrid Team has been assured a few laps prior to the race start, which will be at 7:30 Saturday night (Tomorrow).
This somewhat of a casual approach to competing at a professional level while not intentional may find the beginning of a new trend. It could prove that the time and expense of extending a racing event to four and seven days is not necessary.
Hybrid R&D Racing is an Orange, California based Team that competes in the Prototype Sports Car category of the Grand American Road Racing Championship. The Riley & Scott / Ford is on Yokohama tires and is driven by Chris Bingham of Bellevue, WA. and Mark Simo of Carlsbad, Ca. Team Owner Rod Everett, a native Californian, has over two decades in Motor Racing and looks forward to new challenges this year.
