Michael Shank Racing takes 15th in Homestead qualifying

(Homestead, FL) 23 March 06--Mark Patterson just keeps getting better, and showed it once again on Friday night as he shaved nearly .8 of a second off of his best time of the weekend to qualify the Flight Options Lexus-Riley fifteenth on the grid for Saturday's Linder Industrials Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead Miami Speedway. The time will see the Michael Shank Racing entry line up next to the defending Rolex Sports Car Series champions in the Suntrust Riley.

"That was a good run and makes me the fastest South African in the field," smiled Patterson. "The car is just wonderful to drive and Oz keeps urging me on to be more aggressive and it keeps paying dividends, tenths at a time. I'm really impressed with what Michael Shank Racing has done with this brand new car to run fault-free thus far this weekend, and the car just keeps getting better each time we go out."

Patterson laid a 1:19 lap down in his out lap, then shaved three seconds off that time on his next lap before slowing down for a lap to find a good break in traffic, and then went back to work, narrowing the gap to the leader to work his way down to a best lap time of 1:15.675 seconds, the fastest he has gone all weekend.

"Mark did a fantastic job once again," said team owner Mike Shank. "This is a big field of well-prepared cars with great drivers, and he put his best lap of the weekend down late in qualifying, so he should be pretty pleased with himself and the job he did tonight. It's going to be a long race tomorrow night, but hopefully we can stay out of trouble at the start and are in a good spot to fight in the closing segments of the race."

The Linder Industrials Grand Prix of Miami is slated to start at 6:30 PM local time on Saturday, with Speed Channel broadcasting the race starting at 8:00PM.
