LENGHTY STOP SPOILS NEW CENTURY TEAM'S HOPES FOR HOMESTEAD VICTORY
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 5, 2005) -- After charging his way from the 20th Daytona Prototype class position on the grid to sixth at the halfway point, Cort Wagner's strong run fell on deaf ears as the New Century Mortgage team slipped out of contention when valuable track time was lost in the pits due to a radio problem in the 500hp Lexus-powered Riley.
Johansson managed to keep his nose clean throughout the remainder of the 250-mile sprint, bringing the no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley home seventh and earning the team its second top 10 in as many races.
"We lost two laps on our pit stop and that pretty much set the tone for us for the remainder of the race," said Johansson. "Our speed was right there with the leaders, as well as the pace we were able to maintain. We got pinned back when we had to change out the radio during the pit and that cost us a lot of time. I hate to say that's just motor racing, but I guess it sums up what happened to the New Century car today."
Wagner echoed his teammate's sentiments, but was obviously disappointed about the result as his succinct response would indicate.
"The car was performing well and I had no complaints," said Wagner. "Our speed was on par with the frontrunners, but obviously we lost valuable time in the pits today and that's it."
Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Luis Diaz and Scott Pruett finished fifth in the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley.
