COMPUSA'S DIAZ QUALIFIES FOURTH FOR TOMORROW'S GP OF MIAMI
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 4, 2005) -- With a pair of Chip Ganassi Racing Daytona Prototypes atop the scoring sheets following the soggy morning practice session , Luis Diaz was primed to put his no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley on pole for a record ninth consecutive time in Rolex Series competition for tomorrow's Round 2 Grand American event at Homestead-Miami Speedway. But the team's second entry (no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley) was on the loosing end of an argument with a sand trap in the early goings of the 15-minute DP qualifying session, relegating Diaz to a fourth place starting spot with a top time of 1:15.763 (109.288mph) for the 250-mile dash.
Although the no.01 machine's superb streak of poles comes to an end this afternoon, Diaz understands that the situation was out of his control after spending the majority of the session of pit lane until the checkereds finally waved.
"I think it's going to be a tough race tomorrow, but a fourth place effort isn't that bad," said Diaz, whose teammate Scott Pruett qualified on pole last year in Miami as part of his march to the 2004 Rolex Series title. "We still have a great car, with a great team behind us, so I'm very confident in our ability as a group to run well tomorrow."
Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Cort Wagner and Stefan Johansson qualified 20th in the Daytona Prototype class in the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley with a top time of 1:23.354 (99.335mph).
Fans of CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates can catch the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley in action at the Grand Prix of Miami tomorrow at 3:00 pm ET (LIVE, SPEED Channel).
