Gurney, Vasser come to grips with tricky Homestead track

With a damp surface, threatening weather and no testing time at the blindingly-quick 2.3 mile Homestead-Miami Speedway infield road course, Alex Gurney and Jimmy Vasser were faced with a daunting task Thursday -- put the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley in competitive position for today's qualifying session. The duo did not disappoint, turning in solid top-10 times that left both pleased with their performance and more confident about their unexpected potential. The GAINSCO/Blackhawk team will continue tweaking the car, with practice for the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series scheduled for 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. The GAINSCO Riley will roll off for its 15-minute qualifying session at 6:30 p.m.

Driver Quotes:

Alex Gurney, co-driver: "Today was a good first day. We were playing catch-up a bit because we missed the big series test out here a couple months ago, but the team did a great job adapting the car. We were able to get through some changes and improve the GAINSCO Auto Insurance car through both sessions. Jimmy and I have similar driving styles and it's helping quite a bit with our setup. My only complaint is that it's too dark out there at night! I hope that Grand-Am officials turn up the lights tomorrow!"

Jimmy Vasser, co-driver: "I feel like the car is handling well, and I really enjoy driving with Alex. We worked through a lot of things today to improve our performance, so I'm feeling confident about today's sessions. We struggled a bit with a lack of grip, but some of that I put down to the track -- it just rained and rained and rained today. I'm looking forward to a solid performance in front of the GAINSCO fans."
