Gregoire and Camirand Join Goad in the 09 Daytona Prototype
Spirit of Daytona's driver lineup for the season finale Discount Tire Sunchaser at Miller Motorsports Park will consist of 2005 Spirit of Daytona teammate Stephan Gregoire, 2006 Grand Am Cup GTO driver Marc-Antoine Camirand and team owner Doug Goad. The three drivers have had a considerable amount of seat time in the 09 Daytona Prototype (DP) and are ready to turn their first few laps of the 9-hour endurance desert race.
The driver lineup is a déjà vu of the 2005 race in Mont-Tremblant where Goad, Gregoire and Camirand all shared the wheel. The confident Camirand is excited about being back in the 09 DP and experiencing his first 9-hour endurance race. "I am very happy to be back in the DP," said Camirand. The French Canadian has competed in the 09 DP three times this season but most of his seat time has been in the No. 9 GTO in the Grand Am Cup Series. "I was watching the DP race in Sonoma and it got me really excited about being back in the DP. This will be my first long race. I don't think it will be too different from a six-hour race like the Six Hours of Mont-Tremblant."
One of the potential difficulties of the 4.5mile track will be the lack of marked corners. " I was talking with some of the drivers who have already turned laps on the track and they said it was hard to recognize the corners. There really aren't any landmarks on the track," said Camirand. The lack of landmarks might give the team an added difficulty once they start chasing the sun in the later part of the race.
Team owner/driver Doug Goad is looking forward to the endurance race. "We haven't had many long races this year. Our team in the past has done very well in the six-hour and longer races. We will start with a conservative pace and hopefully that will keep us in one piece and in the front nine hours later. Both Gregoire and Camirand are great drivers. These two individuals are fast and yet very careful with the car. I am happy to have them back in our program."
