Several Rolex Series Teams, Drivers Participate in Porsche Rennsport Reunion II
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 22, 2004) -- More than 600 Porsches from around the world have converged on Daytona International Speedway for this weekend's Porsche Rennsport Reunion II. From the first Porsche ever built to the Porsche-powered Daytona Prototype currently competing in the Rolex Sports Car Series, every make and model of Porsche imaginable is on hand for this weekend's event.
Several Rolex Series drivers and teams are getting in on the action, displaying both current and past race cars as part of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion II.
Brumos Racing emptied out its racing museum to bring 16 of the team's historic race cars to Daytona this weekend, as well as three significant street Porsches from the Brumos Collection and the No. 59 Porsche Fabcar Daytona Prototype.
"This is very special to Brumos, because many of our important victories were here in Daytona; six times the winner of the Rolex 24 hours overall and many class wins," said Brumos Racing team owner Bob Snodgrass. "It's an emotional thing to come here, and it's an awful lot of fun to see people that we haven't seen for years. It's a chance to be reacquainted with people from the past; kind of like an old high school reunion."
All four of Brumos Racing's drivers from the Rolex Series are on hand for this weekend's event, with Hurley Haywood as one of the highlighted drivers during the weekend.
"It brings back a lot of really happy memories," said Haywood, who currently co-drives the No. 59 Porsche Daytona Prototype with JC France. "There are probably at least 20 cars here that have my name on the side of them, so it's kind of a thrill to look at those cars. You look at each one and it brings back a special memory - some of them good and some of them bad.
"When Porsche started this program, they said they were going have a Rennsport Reunion every three years, and this year is just incredible. I think Daytona is going to be the biggest collection of Porsche race cars ever assembled; bigger than the 50th reunion at Laguna Seca. I'm really thankful to be a part of it. I spent almost 35 years driving Porsche, so it's nice to see so many of them still around and well cared for."
Darren Law, who won the Rolex Series GT championship at the wheel of a G&W Motorsports Porsche in 2001, is now part of the Brumos Racing legacy as one of the drivers of the No. 58 Red Bull Porsche.
"It's an honor to be here," said Law, who shares with No. 58 Porsche with David Donohue. "I was thrilled that Brumos asked me to be here. It's unbelievable to see all the cars and people. It should be a great event."
Gunnar Racing will have 22 Porsches at the Rennsport Reunion this weekend.
"It's totally cool to be out here with all this history," said Gunnar Racing driver Gunnar Jeannette, who recently teamed with Kyle Petty for a second-place finish in the GT class at the Food City 250. "This is what I've grown up around, being around Daytona, Sebring and LeMans Porsche winners all my life. To come to one place and see them all in one spot is pretty neat."
The Racer's Group driver Kevin Buckler will also make an appearance with the team's 2002 Rolex 24-winning Porsche GT3 RS.
"This is the largest gathering of historically significant Porsches I've ever see," said Buckler. "Racing at Daytona in a Porsche is neat, but seeing all these cars and drivers here is awesome."
Three-time Rolex Series champion G&W Motorsports will offer fans a chance to win a 1973 Porsche 911 by registering at its display this weekend. Other Rolex Series and Grand-Am Cup Series drivers and teams spotted at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Daytona include Michael Levitas of TPC Racing, John Wright of Schuitemaker Racing, Larry Schumacher of Schumacher Racing, Steve Southard and Chip Vance of Auto Assets and Chris Hall of Silverstone Racing Services.
