Lexington, Ohio (14 June 2013) – Spirit of Daytona Racing won the 2012 Diamond Cellar Classic at Mid-Ohio, and the team got off to a strong start to defending the 2013 edition on Friday as Ricky Taylor posted a fast lap time of 1:17.001-seconds to score a spot on the front row with the No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Corvette DP.

Taylor will open the 2.75-hour race from behind the wheel before turning the car over to co-driver Richard Westbrook, who was part of the Spirit of Daytona line up for the 2012 victory at the track. Taylor exchanged the fastest laps of the session with his brother Jordan, who ended with a lap that was .049 of a second ahead to take the point as Corvette DP’s locked out the first two rows.

“We have a good race car and we had the pace to be one spot better, but with the yellow in the middle of the session Ricky just didn’t have the tires where he needed them to be,” said team owner Troy Flis. “I am happy to be on the front row, but we’d have loved to be on pole! It’s an encouraging start to the weekend, and we’ll just focus ahead to the race tomorrow.”

“Our car was very strong,” said Taylor, who has 10 Rolex Series poles to his credit. “Unfortunately with the procedure for the yellow flag, we had traffic when we went back out and didn’t get the tires up to temperature in time. Track position is important here so it would have been great to be on pole. But it is still a good place to start, and hopefully we will be in good shape in the race tomorrow.”
