WAGNER PROPELS NEW CENTURY MACHINE TO EIGHTH IN FONTANA

FONTANA, Calif. (April 2, 2005) -- After spending much of Saturday practice basking in the California sun with times flirting in the top-three, Los Angeles native Cort Wagner was optimistic as he strapped into the no.02 New Century Mortgage Chip Ganassi Racing Daytona Prototype for qualifying around California Speedway's 2.82-mile circuit. But Wagner was unable to translate practice session successes into qualifying kudos, clocking in with a best lap of 1:34.131 (107.850 mph). The lap was good enough for the eighth starting spot in tomorrow's Ferrari Maserati 400k -- Round 3 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at California Speedway.

Wagner waged a fierce battle on the DP qualifying contenders, running times at or near that of eventual polesitter and teammate Luis Diaz of Chip Ganassi Racing (no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley), but was unable to sustain the pace in the 15-minute session.

"I'm not really sure what happened," said Wagner, who with co-driver Stefan Johansson stands tied for third in DP points coming into Fontana. "I was initially encouraged by the practice times we ran earlier in the day, and we thought our fastest laps were yet to come. The whole New Century Mortgage team was firing on all cylinders-- we just needed something to get us to that next level today. I'm confident that we'll perform well in the race tomorrow. We're running in front of a hometown crowd with New Century Mortgage here, so we'll be ready when the green flag drops."

Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Diaz and Scott Pruett qualified on pole position in the Daytona Prototype class in the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley with a top time of 1:33.356 (108.745 mph). Diaz drove to his first career pole, making it a record 13 DP poles in 15 career Rolex Series appearances for the team.

Ferrari Maserati 400k qualifying results include position, (car number) and drivers with qualifying driver first, class, car, best lap time, best lap speed.
