Fresh off a win at Watkins Glen, Bob Stallings Racing's Jon Fogarty captured the pole Friday in qualifying for round seven of the Rolex Sports Car Series at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, giving the team its third consecutive pole and fourth of the season. Fogarty, driving the No. 99 Pontiac Riley, lapped the 2.25-mile course in 1:18.374. Fogarty and his teammate, Alex Gurney, have qualified on the front row in all seven races this year. He and Gurney have two wins thus far.
"It was a good lap - I really laid it out, and that's what we practice for," said Fogarty after breaking Max Papis' Daytona Prototype track record. "This kind of performance is what we work toward as a driver - having a great car that's fast and consistent. What's really special is that this kind of result is something that no one person can achieve - it requires a total team effort, and that's what the team has put together. It's always nerve-wracking as a driver to sit there and watch your time be attacked, but we didn't want to put too many laps of the tires because we have to use them in the race tomorrow."
Christian Fittipaldi qualified second in the Cheever Racing Porsche Fabcar, lapping the course in 1:18.697. Darren Law was third in the Brumos Racing Porsche Riley, followed by SunTrust Racing's Jonathan Cochet and Ganassi Racing's Memo Rojas.
"I was a little bit surprised at the No. 99, but we got beat fair and square," admitted Fittipaldi. "We definitely had it all together for qualifying, but I'm still happy, considering all the problems we've had. It was a great effort from the team. We basically had to rebuild this car completely yesterday (after a wreck the previous day). I think it's a good position to start for the race."
Saturday's race will take the green flag at 5:45 EDT and be broadcast tape delay on Speed starting at 8 p.m. EDT.
