GT Drivers Hiskey, Pobst are happy with Dunlop Tires.
PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 22, 2002) - Kim Hiskey would like to make the 2002 racing season as successful as her 2001 campaign. Hiskey and co-driver Randy Pobst piloted the winning car in the Rolex Sports Car Series' GT class four times last year.
This year they'll race on Dunlop tires.
Hiskey and Pobst, racing for Hiskey's Crazy Red Head Racing, teamed to win at Phoenix, Mid-Ohio, Road America and Watkins Glen in 2001. Hiskey finished eighth in the class' drivers standings and Pobst finished seventh.
"I have been really impressed with the Dunlop tires this (season) because the tires come in really fast (during a tire stint)," Hiskey said. "At Homestead, Randy was happy with them at the end."
They teamed at Phoenix and Homestead to finish third in both races, their best results of the season.
Hiskey said the team's pre-race focus is to have the car running well on worn tires.
"We tend to set up for what it (the car) is going to feel like at the end of the stint," Hiskey said. "We run on worn tires in practice, in part to see what they'll feel like at the end."
At Phoenix, the team bolted a fresh set of Dunlops on their Porsche GT3 before the track's Media Day event Wednesday and used them while giving members of the media exhibition rides. They used the same tires for two practice sessions Thursday. Pobst posted the team's fastest practice time at the end of the second session.
During the Phoenix race Pobst battled the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington and Bell Motorsports teams for the class lead. Pobst and Hiskey led their class after the halfway point before finishing 10th overall.
Dunlop is the sole tire supplier for the GT and SRP II classes.
"It's interesting, running on a spec tire because all the Porsches are the same," Hiskey said. "It's driver versus driver and set up versus set up."
Hiskey, the mother of 15-year-old Jason and eight-year-old Marissa, started racing in 1980 when she competed in rallies. She took time off from her racing career to start a family, then started racing again when her husband, Steve, gave her a Porsche for a Mother's Day gift. She started racing in autocross competition in the late 1990s and competed as a professional for the first time in 1999.
Pobst won the GT class in the 2001 Rolex 24 at Daytona and has more than 40 other professional wins.
