ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (July 9, 2000) -- The Doran Lista Special of Didier Theys, Fredy Leinhard and Mauro Baldi won a battle of attrition at Road America on Sunday, score their second Grand American Road Racing Association victory of 2000 in the Sargento/Road America 500. Mimmo Schiattarelli and Eric van de Poele took second in the Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP, 63 seconds back. The Doran trio led three times for 46 of the 125 circuit. Baldi and Theys were winners earlier this season in the Nextel 250 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “We changed the car Sunday morning to gain more downforce, and we came up with a good setup,” explained Baldi. “We were down on speed on the straights, but it really helped us in the corners, along with tire wear. Unbelievable, the lesser I revved the engine, the quicker were my lap times.” “This race was good because we used all our strenghts – good drivers, Kevin Doran’s strategies, and a hard working crew,” said Theys. Butch Leitzinger battled Theys for the lead in a sprint to the finish. Leitzinger led three times for 13 laps, and was passed by Theys with 13 laps remaining. However, the Creighton Motorsports Ford Lola Leitzinger shared with Scott Schubot began smoking with seven laps remaining and spun into a gravel trap. He recovered to finish seventh. The Dyson Racing team of James Weaver and Andy Wallace led three times for 55 laps, and were in contention until pitting with brake problems on lap 91. They recovered to finish fourth, just behind teammates Rob Dyson, Elliott Forbes-Robinson and John Paul Jr. Weaver retained his Grand-Am points lead, with Theys 13 points behind and Jack Baldwin 14 points back. The new InterSport Lola Judd of Oliver Gavin and Jon Field also ran near the front, leading twice for five laps, until a late spin into the gravel cost it several laps and resulted in a fifth place finish. An overshot of their pit stall cost Jack Baldwin, George Robinson and Hurley Haywood several laps, finishing sixth. Larry Schumacher and Martin Snow won SportsRacer Lights in a Nissan Lola, ending Larry Oberto and Ryan Hampton’s five-race winning streak. Rich Grupp and Dennis Spencer were second in a Mazda-Kudzu, followed by Oberto, Hampton and Paul Macey in a Nissan Lola. Darren Law and Mike Fitzgerald scored their third consecutive GTU victory, and fourth of the season, in the G&W Porsche. Rick Fairbanks and Andy Pilgrim took second in the Genesis BMW M-3. Irv Hoerr joined Roger Schramm and Werner Frank to win American GT in a Camaro, losing the lead only briefly on their final pit stop. It was Hoerr’s second victory of the season, following an overall triumph at Phoenix with Jack Baldwin. Doug Goad and Craig Conway took second in the Spirit of Daytona Camaro. Terry Borcheller and Ron Johnson battled fuel pickup problems to claim their fourth GTO victory of the season in the Saleen Allen Speedlab Saleen SR, with the Viper of Jim and Mike McCann and Jeff Altenburg second. The Saleen SR was virtually destroyed in a Friday practice fire, with the team working 24 hours to rebuild the car. The Sargento/Road America 500 will be the seventh race on the inaugural Grand Am. The series next visits Quebec, Canada, for the Player’s Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres on July 23. The season concludes August 25-26 with the Twin 100s and Six Hours at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
