MOWLEM, ORBIT TEAM SEEKING ANOTHER MAGICAL DAYTONA RUN
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2010) - Johnny Mowlem and his Orbit Racing teammates are trying to capture magic a second time and they are in perfect position to do so.
Mowlem raced for the Orbit team when he won the GT class at Daytona in 2004. In one of the most talked-about finishes in the long history of the event, Mowlem held off Mike Rockenfeller in a mad dash to the finish.
On Thursday, Mowlem qualified the team's Porsche GT3 sixth in the GT class for this weekend's running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the annual test of automotive engineering at the World's Center of Speed, Daytona International Raceway. Because of the strong effort, the Orbit car is locked in to its qualifying spot and Friday's second round of time trials does not impact the team. The crew can concentrate on race preparation.
"I'm delighted for the team to be able to place them near the front," Mowlem said. "It was also the fastest lap I've done round Daytona in a GT car, so that's rather nice!"
As an added bonus Mowlem placed the Orbit car second among the 14 Porsche GT entries.
Orbit team owner Rodger Hawley said, "I'm delighted to be right up at the front amongst this class of opposition. This whole deal came together quite late and it's nice to walk back in from having been out for a while and show the other teams we're a factor. Johnny did an amazing job for us, but with him I've come to expect that. Today (Friday) is now all about changing the gearbox and prepping the car totally for tomorrow's race."
