DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (NOV. 7, 2002) -- Bill Auberlen and co-driver Cort Wagner are within a few days of winning a championship. The Ferrari co-drivers can win the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series GT class championship with a strong finish in the Grand Am Finale at Daytona International Speedway on Nov. 10.

Auberlen and Wagner, driving for the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington team, are tied at the top of the GT standings with 278 points each. If their car finishes 17th or better in class and both drivers compete, they would share the championship.

And, according to Auberlen, much of the credit for the team's success this season belongs to Dunlop tires.

"They get better and faster as your fuel load burns off," said Auberlen, a veteran of 16 years in sports car racing. "I've never seen that with a GT tire before."

Dunlop is the sole tire supplier for the GT and SRP II classes.

"Dunlop has very, very strong tire," Auberlen added. "We got a lot of help from the Dunlop engineers this year."

The GT class has been very competitive this season. In the most recent race, at Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, GT cars finished second and third overall. Despite stiff competition, the Auberlen/Wagner duo has managed to win the class in the last five consecutive races.

Kevin Buckler is third in the standings with 256 points and Joao Barbosa is fourth with 251.

"We've got our fingers crossed," Auberlen said. "We're in a very good position. Of course, if my teammate starts the race and the car has a problem, then he wins the championship on his own."

Auberlen joked that he has been preaching to his teammate about the value of safe, consistent laps and an early pit stop for a driver change.

Bill Auberlen and the rest of the GT drivers in the Rolex Sports Car Series know they can count on the consistency of their Dunlop tires.
