Michael Shank Racing on seventh row for Daytona night sprint
(Daytona Beach, FL)- June 30-- Michael Shank Racing will start from 13th on the grid after Paul Mears Jr. set a personal best at Daytona International Raceway with a fast lap time of 1:48.715 seconds in the Mears Motor Coach Pontiac-Riley. For Mears, the effort was his first time qualifying the MSR car in Rolex competition, and he showed good form to run several laps all within a tenth of his best time.
Mears will start tonight's 70-lap race before turning the car over to Mike Borkowski, who with Mears powered the car to a third place finish at California Speedway in April.
"I was working pretty hard out there!" smiled Mears, who hails from nearby Orlando. "The car was really good, and while of course we'd like to be even further up on the grid, we'll take the result and get ready for the race."
Team owner Mike Shank was impressed with Mears' effort in his qualifying debut with the team.
"He did a great job for us this afternoon," said Shank. "His times during that session were impressively consistent, and he's doing exactly what we are asking him to do. Hopefully we can have a good clean start and Paul should be able to turn the car over to Mike in a good position on the lead lap, and we can have a strong finish. We have had a couple of tough races in a row, and we'd like to turn things around here at Daytona with a good result. The guys have been working non-stop to get the car ready and we are pumped up about this race."
The 70-lap event will start at 7:15, with the race being covered on Speed Channel beginning at 8:00 PM EST.
