Dunlop drivers Borcheller, Barbosa take Daytona poles.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 3, 2002) - Terry Borcheller and Joao Barbosa will start first in their respective classes in Thursday night's Jani-King Paul Revere 250 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
Borcheller and co-driver Niclas Jonsson will start first among the SRP II class entrants. Barbosa and co-driver Thierry Perrier will start first among the GT class cars. Dunlop is the sole tire provider for the SRP II and GT classes.
"I brought them in easily," Borcheller said of his tires. "I took it easy on the second lap because I was thinking about the third lap and beyond that. I (took the pole) on the third lap."
Borcheller, driving a Nissan-powered Lola, averaged 118.800 mph during his pole-winning lap around the 3.56-mile road course. The car will start sixth overall.
Barbosa's Mosler MT900 will start 14th overall. His pole-winning lap averaged 112.251 mph. It was the fourth class pole for the Perspective Racing Team and Barbosa credited both his car and his tires for the team's success this season.
"They just work really good together," the native of Portugal said. "We can double stint ... and run the same pace from the start to the end of the stint. The first two laps are really, really good and then there isn't much fall off."
Borcheller, who won the 2001 GTS championship in the American Le Mans Series on Dunlop tires, said, "They're really consistent. I have a lot of faith in them because of their consistency."
The race is scheduled to start at 11:15 p.m. Thursday. It will be televised, via tape delay, by SPEED Channel on July 6.
